Abducted Assam forest officials still untraced

Guwahati: Police and the security forces conducted searches in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Sunday to trace two forest officials abducted by militants but there was no trace of them. Militant outfit Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tigers (KPLT) had on Saturday evening abducted the Chief Conservator of Forests Abhijit Rabha and his range officer Ranjan Baruah from Batlog area in the district. The militants later demanded Rs 1 crore for their release. Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police D. B. Chetry said that operations are on to trace the abducted duo. “We have received some leads and we are hopeful of some breakthrough soon,” he said, but declined to divulge details for security reasons.  15 killed in road mishap

Aizawl: At least 15 people, incuding a child, were killed and several others were injured when a Mizoram State Transport bus fell into a deep gorge about 123 kms northeast of the state capital on Saturday. Police said six women, a child, the bus driver and his andyman were among those killed in the mishap. “While ten of them died on the spot, five others succumbed to their injuries at Darlawn hospital,” a source from Darlawn hospital said. The condition of five of the injured passengers was stated to be critical, sources added. The bus carrying 34 passengers was travelling from Aizawl to Vaitin village near the Manipur border. Sources said the driver was taking a short cut which was a fair-weather road but it had become slippery following heavy rainfall and the bus fell into the gorge. (UNI)
