NONGSTOIN: The Rambrai Block Congress Committee has suffered a major blow after the party’s top leaders joined the NPP in Rambrai under the leadership of former MDC JTS Thongni who is also the current working president of the West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee.
Besides, the cousin brother of Rambrai MLA Kimfa Marbaniang quit Congress and joined the NPP on the same day as well.
Speaking to reporters, Thongni said the reason why he defected was because the Congress was interested in enrolling individuals with money and ignored other leaders.
By joining the NPP, Thongni has put the Congress in a dilemma.
Thongni was the former MDC of Nongstoin constituency and was offered Congress ticket for the council election by Marbaniang.
However, the deal turned ugly after Marbaniang decided to support his brother-in-law Banjop Pyngrope as the MDC candidate from Congress in Rambrai.
Thongni said he has organised more than 107 units and will support NPP candidate World Champion Paliar.
He also said the Congress has failed to allot the MDC ticket as the people of Rambrai will not support an outsider as the candidate is from Lumparing.
“I will take up the matter personally and will work to ensure that the Congress loses in West Khasi Hills,” he added.
Paliar, who is the president of NPP Rambrai block and candidate in the upcoming council election, expressed his gratitude over the joining of Congress leaders in the party and expressed hope that the NPP will emerge victorious in the council election.
