TURA: International day for women was celebrated in Garo Hills with Union Minister of State for Rural Development and local MP Agatha K Sangma joining womenfolk in a special programme at PA Sangma Foundation complex on Thursday.

“Women face a lot of problems and struggle immensely all over the world and we are fortunate our society is matrilineal,” said Ms Sangma.

Speaking briefly on the issue of domestic violence, she said, “It is wrong to raise a hand on a woman and child because it amounts to violation of one’s rights.”

The Union Minister of State also lauded women’s groups for leading from the front in many of today’s day-to-day activities and women self-help groups are constantly in the front.

“To some extend we can notice women empowerment in our state, particularly Garo Hills, which is commendable,” said Agatha Sangma.

One line of work where women have excelled is in politics which is a positive sign of democracy, cited Agatha Sangma.

“Today our country’s President and the chairperson of our Central government are women. There are a vast number of political bodies in rural areas where women are leading from the front. The Panchayati Raj has reservation for women. All these speak a lot for women empowerment,” said the union minister of state.
