SHILLONG: With only two days left for nominations for the council polls to close, the state BJP appears to be in a fix as the party has not yet come up with names of candidates.
When reporters met state BJP MLA and Cabinet minister AL Hek, he, however, said there were ticket aspirants who tried to apply in the past few days.
He said the in-charge of district council elections of the party and general secretary, Bashailang Khongwir, in his report to the national leadership has said the state BJP has not decided on fielding any candidate.
“As a political party, it has to contest the election but it all depends on the party whether to field any candidate. Even the executive committee of the party has not met,” he said.
Hek denied that the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, was instrumental in keeping aspiring candidates away from BJP.
He expressed confidence about “baptising winning candidates into the party”.
Meanwhile, Hek urged the people of Pynthorumkhrah to lend their support to his nephew, Rocky Hek, who is contesting the election as an independent candidate.
