SHILLONG: Cabinet Minister and People’s Democratic Front (PDF) MLA Hamlet Dohling has criticised national parties such as the Congress and the BJP for promoting national and not regional interests.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Dohling urged the people to give regional parties an opportunity as national parties will overlook the interest of the indigenous people.
Dohling also referred to the controversial uranium mining issue which has almost created a division in the Khasi community and added that uranium mining is for national interest.
He alleged that Congress candidate from Mylliem Ronnie Lyngdoh was instrumental in allowing the Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL) to mine uranium in Domiasiat. Dohling also did not spare the BJP and attacked the party for coming up with the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which according to him, suits national interest while suppressing the rights of the indigenous people.
Reacting to a query that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has the support of BJP MLAs, he said that the four PDF MLAs are supporting the NPP. Asked if he would demand the removal of the two MLAs, Dohling refused to make further comments by stating that he does not want to intervene into the affairs of other political parties.
