SHILLONG: The fault lines in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) that developed over the issues of CAB and common candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat are deepening, according to Opposition Chief Whip and Congress MLA PT Sawkmie.
Sakwmie on Thursday said that the crack was getting wider and deeper with every passing day.
‘‘Right from the beginning, when they were talking about the common candidate the crack has only got bigger and deeper,” Sawkmie said.
Sawkmie’s observations come at a time when the UDP, which is a key constituent of the MDA, is demanding that the coalition drop BJP, and its insistence on fielding Jemino Mawthoh as candidate for the Shillong seat regardless of what the other partners decide.
“I don’t know how serious the UDP is, but it seems they have given a deadline to the MDA leader to remove the BJP from the coalition after the ADC elections,” Sawkmie said.
He said that the UDP’s demand to drop BJP from the coalition arises from the embarrassment which the former is facing while campaigning during the elections as they are partners. He said a regional party going with the BJP and the present government will badly affect them.
Going by the statements coming from the leaders form the MDA, it is apparent that there is disagreement in the MDA over several issues be it the demand for dropping BJP from the MDA and selecting a common candidate.
The chief minister and other partners are hoping that all the issues will be resolved during a discussion in the MDA coordination committee meeting.
