Poll prohibitions imposed in districts

SHILLONG/TURA/ NONGSTOIN/MAWKYRWAT:With the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, the model code of conduct has become effective in all the districts.
The administrations in East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills districts have imposed prohibitions in line with the Election Commission’s model code of conduct.
Meeting with parties
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh convened a meeting with political parties on Tuesday to brief them on the model code of conduct.
Spelling out the dos and don’ts, Singh expressed hope that all political parties and their contesting candidates will strictly abide by the rules and set an example of high moral standards for themselves towards achieving a successful, peaceful and fair election in keeping with the true essence of democratic ethics and practices.
He also reminded the Election Commission’s directives on plastic reduction and reiterated his appeal to all political parties to spread the message of minimal use of plastic wares like water bottles.
Copies of MCC guidelines were handed over to the representatives of the political parties.
Tura parliamentary constituency comprises 24 Assembly segments.
East Garo Hills District Magistrate Swapnil Tembe has promulgated Section 144 prohibiting illegal collection of money, donations, contributions or subscription from shopkeepers, market places, plying vehicles by any individual in the district.

THE DON’TS
*Wall writing, pasting of posters, papers or defacement of public and private properties, display of cutouts, hoarding, banners on public property or premises.
* Putting up banners on roads and thoroughfares.
* Election meetings without permission from the office of the district magistrate and district election officer and subsequently local headmen regarding venue.
*Loudspeakers between 10 pm and 6 am. PA system/loudspeakers used without permission will be seized.
*Rallies and processions without the permission of the administration.
*Carrying of cash of more than Rs 50,000 besides gold and silver without valid documents.
*Any agitation by individuals or organisations has been prohibited to maintain law and order.

ARMS DEPOSITION
*All licensed arms holders in the districts have to deposit their licensed arms at the nearest police stations, outposts and beat houses with immediate effect to maintain law and order to ensure peaceful conduct of the general elections.
*Any individual who desires to appeal against the order may submit his/her written justification for retaining his/her licensed arms.
