Shillong: Residents of Mawlai are set to heave a sigh of relief from the worsening traffic problems along the narrow roads of the locality once the Rs 2.60-crore project for widening of the roads is completed in May.

“With the completion of this project, people will be freed from the traffic problems which have become a menace in recent days,” Parliamentary Secretary and local legislator Founder S Cajee said, adding that the project would be completed in May.

The project, which commenced in September last year, is funded under the Sustainable Planning Act (SPA) 2009, of the Central Planning Department.

The Planning department is funding two projects — one being the widening of the road right from Lad Jingthang Briew, Phudmuri till Stand Bus, Mawdatbaki while the other project involves construction of a connecting road from Stephan Memorial School, Mawroh to Kynton Massar and the road leading to NEHU.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the project did not suffer any problems regarding land acquisition as many landowners had willingly parted with their land for the project.

Rangbah Shnong of Mawlai Phudmuri, Dolphin Lyngkot lauded the generosity of the residents of the area who willingly signed the documents to part with their lands for greater good of the locality.
