SHILLONG: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) which implemented the Umiam-Jorabat four- lane expressway project, requires 2.82  hectares of  land for slop stabilization to address the problem of  landslides along the road.

Though NHAI had asked the Ri Bhoi district Administration for the additional land long time back, but the district administration so far have not provided the land to the agency.

The NHAI needs 2.82  hectares of land in 15  areas along the road

It may be mentioned that there have been few instances of landslide along the road but over the years landslide cases have gone down. The road usually stands vulnerable to landslides during  monsoon season.

Sources said that roads was stable now and there should not be any problem for landslide

In addition, the NHAI is also supposed to construct foot bridges in five different locations along the road including two in Umsning and one each in Byrnihat, Umling and Nongpoh

The NHAI will ask the local contractors through bidding to construct the foot bridges. However, the  NHAI cannot call for bids at the  moment due to model poll code of conduct due to forthcoming parliamentary election.

It was also informed that the locations of the footbridges had been finalised in consultation with the Deputy Commissioner.

Meanwhile, sources also said that the safety auditing of the recently completed Umsning bypass would begin this month, adding the work along the junctions of the road has also been completed
