SHILLONG: The KSU’s Jaiñtia Hills district unit has decided to oppose Friday’s public hearing on the proposal of the Cement Manufacturing Company Limited (CMCL) to acquire more land for mining of lime stones in Lum Shnong area in Jaiñtia Hills.

The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) is scheduled to conduct the public hearing.

While maintaining that the Union is committed towards protection of mineral resources and environment, KSU unit’s organizing Secretary Nangaibormi Syiem Sutnga said the proposed public hearing of the MPSB is only a formality.

“We know that the CMCL would anyway get the approval to acquire more land since they strongly suspect that there would be manipulation in the report of the public hearing to be submitted to the Union Ministry of Forest and Environment,” Sutnga said.

He further said that they would not allow the Government to issue fresh permission to the cement plants to acquire more areas for mining lime stones.

The Jaiñtia Youth Federation (JYF) Narpuh Circle has also decided to oppose the intention of the cement company to further expand its area of operation.
