SHILLONG: The poor drainage system has been one of the major issues that has been prevailing for a while now with open drains all across the city. The open drains are also unsafe for the people walking around. With the inevitability of monsoon, floods are a regular phenomenon every year in the city.
A short-lived downpour in the city on Friday led to the overflowing of drains, flooding the entire lane from Pantaloons mall leading towards Motinagar. While some people desperately walked past it, others went the other way round due to the contaminated drain water that flooded the area.
The drainage system near Bethany society is also deplorable with water threatening to spill over even after a short downpour leaving waste and scrap behind. Such drains, if not checked properly, lead to floods that are hazardous to lives of people living around.
