TURA: Fissures in the ranks of the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) have begun to show with its Dalu unit announcing support to NPP candidate Agatha K Sangma in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls even as the chairman of the central executive body, Nikman Ch Marak, had earlier extended support to the Congress.
“The GSMC, which is an offshoot of the Garo National Council (GNC), has been demanding creation of a separate Garoland state. The announcement of Nikman to support the Congress without even consulting the unit and its members has immensely disappointed us,” the Chairman of the GSMC from Dalu, Junstemey R Marak said.
Reminding that the GNC was supporting Agatha K Sangma, Marak also pledged support to the former MP adding that the Congress could not be trusted to take up the issue of ‘Garoland’.
“We cannot forget the time when 25 of our members were jailed for two months for agitating in demand for a Garoland state. We also cannot forget the words of then chief minister Mukul Sangma, who said that Meghalaya can in no way be demarcated to carve out a separate state for the Garos,” Marak recalled.
Reminding that Late Purno A Sangma was the only one to raise the issue of a separate Garoland state in Parliament, Marak while extending full support to the party hoped that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and party candidate Agatha K Sangma would not forget the promises of their father and work towards achieving the goal.
