Mawkyrwat: A rally against alcohol, drug abuse and rape was held at Rangblang market in Mawkyrwat on Wednesday. It was organised by Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Rangblang Area (SRSRA).
Speaking as the chief guest at the gathering, South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo said that “alcohol is the root of all social evil” and sometimes it leads to death.
She added that does not only affect health, but also destroy families, affect employment and create social problems which sometimes lead to death.
Laloo said that the district administration is taking this issue seriously and also called upon the people to co-operate in controlling this menace. “I know that there are VDPs, Churches, NGOs, Seng Samla Shnong (youth organisation) and Seng Kynthei (Women Organisation) in your villages, but we need your decision individually on this issue,” the DC added.
While wishing the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong success in the fight against alcohol, drugs and violence against women, Laloo assured that the office of the deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, Excise Department and other departments are ready to extend support to the villages in terms of awareness programme and skills development.
