SHILLONG: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks re-election for a second term in office, the Opposition Congress fears such an eventuality would be dangerous for the country.
Speaking at a public meeting organised by the Congress to garner support for its candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, Vincent H Pala, in Laban on Saturday, Opposition chief whip and Congress MLA PT Sawkmie said that people should choose the best of the best as prime minister.
Accusing Modi of harassing the common and poor people of the country, he said many even in the BJP fold are not happy with the prime minister.
Stating that demonetisation was a wrong move of the Union government, he said that India under the leadership of Modi has slipped back instead of moving forward.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Celestine Lyngdoh said that the UDP is accusing Congress of working for some particular communities whereas it was the Congress government which had introduced the fifth and sixth schedules of the Constitution for the benefit of the tribals.
“India needs a Prime Minister and not a chowkidar,” he said.
Pala said that in the last ten years, he has brought many developmental projects to Shillong be it roads, the passport office or even the high court.
Terming unemployment as the biggest challenge, he said that the BJP has an evil design for the people of South Shillong constituency as it wants to send the local MLA, Sanbor Shullai, who is doing an excellent job, to Delhi as MP.
He also said that by putting up its candidate, the BJP wants to cut down on the non-tribal vote of Congress as most of them vote for the party.
“We need a party with numbers in Parliament as just one or two MPs belonging to regional parties only sit at the back in Parliament and nobody even listens to them,” he said.
