SHILLONG: Several students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) were injured on Saturday in two incidents of scuffle.
Police said the first incident started from the campus where a cultural programme was being held.
According to a group of students, on Friday the husband of a woman who works on the campus was speeding on a bike and hit a child inside the college premises. Some students gheroaed him and a scuffle ensued.
After the programme on Saturday night when some students, who stay on NEHU campus, were on their way to hostel by bus, a group of people attacked the vehicle somewhere in Mawlai leading to injuries to several students.
The students were taken hostage for nearly half an hour, some students claimed. They also said on Sunday afternoon the boys’ hostel in Lapalang was attacked by miscreants and a few students were injured.
The second incident involved a separate group of NIT students.
Dean (Students’ Welfare) Atanu Banerjee said there was a brawl among 4-5 students after the cultural programme on Saturday inside the bus on FCI road, Mawlai. The programme ended around 9 pm and students who were staying inside NEHU campus left for the hostel.
“Four-five students engaged in a heated exchange of words which led to shoving and pushing during which one of the students fell down.. The driver stopped the bus and informed us,” the dean said.
He further mentioned that the police were informed and the situation was brought under control. The police then took the students to their hostels.
“The situation is okay now. The incident took place around 11 pm,” Banerjee said.
Holiday: The institute will have holidays on account of the Lok Sabha elections and Bihu. It was also informed that almost all the students have left for Guwahati on Sunday under CRPF escort.
