The pathetic condition of the roadside at Keating Road. With construction materials dumped over the drain, the waste water spills on to the road, making it difficult for pedestrians to use the road. Also there are concerns of hygiene due to the stagnant water on the roadside. (ST)

The Keating road locality of Shillong city is one of the areas of the city where traffic jam is a common sight thanks to the small and narrow roads which can accommodate maximum two vehicles at a time.

In recent years, the traffic situation scenario in the area has further worsened.

If one goes by the word of the police the huge number of vehicle repairing and accessory shops is one of the main reasons for the congestion in the area.

Often these shops park the vehicles arbitrarily on the road and they even fix the different accessories in the vehicles right on the spot which often lead to traffic jams.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh while speaking on the issue said that the police cannot enforce strict traffic management rules in the area since they are plagued by manpower problems.

“Definitely these repair workshops are the main reason for traffic jams as they park their vehicle wherever they want,” Lyngdoh added.

The narrow stretch becomes more congested as all the local taxis ply through this small stretch to reach Khyndai Lad. Lyngdoh also asserted that they have written to the local Dorbar not to issue any NOC to these shops to repair their vehicles right on the middle of the road.

“Our men do go there from time to time and we are trying our best to ease the congestion in the area,” Lyngdoh added. (By Aafaque Hussain)
