SHILLONG: A day after former Congress leader John F Kharshiing declared his support to the MDA’s common candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, Jemino Mawthoh, in the upcoming election, the state Congress hit back at him saying he left the party simply because he was not given a ticket.
Talking to The Shillong Times here on Tuesday, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Celestine Lyngdoh said that the Congress has nothing against him, but it is a fact that he left because he couldn’t be given a party ticket to contest the election from Shillong.
“He was one of the aspirants who wanted to contest from Shillong, but since he did not get the chance, he decided to leave the party,” Lyngdoh said, adding only one person could be given the ticket for Shillong seat.
Stating that his decision to leave the party will not have any ramification as the state goes to polls in less than 48 hours, he added that people know Kharshiing was with the Congress and prior to that in UDP as well.
He also termed Kharshiing as a political opportunist.
Kharshiing had defended his decision to leave Congress saying he was impressed by the united efforts of the regional parties to field a common candidate and hence he is supporting Jemino Mawthoh.
