SHILLONG/TURA: The Plain Belt District Demand Committee has withdrawn its proposed shutdown in the plain belt region from 6 am after the West Garo Hills district administration agreed to look into its demands. The district administration officials held a meeting with the representatives of the organization on Tuesday night and succeeded in convincing the agitators to call off their proposed strike. The Plain Belt District Demand Committee has been demanding creation of a separate district with its headquarters at Rajpur. The district administration also withdrew Section 144 CrPC imposed earlier in view of the agitation call. The committee has been told to submit its demands in writing, sources said.

Opposed: Meanwhile, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has opposed the demand made by the Plain Belt District Demand Committee for creation of a separate district.

“The GSU will not allow such organization to divide Garo Hills for non-tribals. The union is very much aware that the creation of such a district will only help multiplication of non-tribals in that area and the local indigenous people residing in that area will be suppressed,” GSU said in a press communiqué to The Shillong Times.
