GUWAHATI: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Thursday urged the Assam government to start the process of issuing minority certificates at the earliest, cautioning that any delay in this would deprive Muslim students of Assam an opportunity to secure admission in the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G).
The issue assumes significance as there will be a 4.5 percent reservation for Muslim students in IIT-G from this year. From this year on, the IIT-JEE admission committee has decided to introduce a 4.5 percent reservation for Muslims from within the 27 percent quota reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
“In Assam, the minority certificate is prerequisite for securing admissions in IITs under 4.5 percent reservations for all minority communities,” said AIUDF legislator and leader of Opposition in the Assam assembly Sirajuddin Ajmal Thursday.
“It is a matter of concern that the state government has not been issuing certificates to Muslim students. The delay would deprive students of the community in the state from getting admissions this year in IIT Guwahati.(IANS)
