Mawkyrwat: A two-day training programme on waste management organised by Sankur Rikynti Khain Nonglang and Mawkyrwat Hat was held at Mawkyrwat market on Tuesday.
It was organised in collaboration with the BDU SWKH and State Council of Science Technology and Environment.
Extra assistant Officer (EAC) of South West Khasi Hills L K Diengdoh stressed on maintaining cleanliness in the markets. The EAC said that ‘behavioural change’ of the public is the need of the hour.
“We have organised programmes like ‘walk and pick’ to depict our seriousness on maintaining cleanliness, protecting the environment and water bodies. We wish to make cleanliness a priority among the public,” Diengdoh added.
He also made them aware that Wah Sala, their source of drinking water, will soon turn into a sequel of Wah Umkhrah if they do not take any action.
He also mentioned that the Khasis were earlier known to maintain utmost cleanliness which is gradually fading.
Others who were present include the SDO PHE Mawkyrwat Sub-Division, R. Nongdhar and representative from Sankur Rikynti Khain Nonglang & Mawkyrwat Hat YG Lyngdoh.
