WGH police pull up socks after murder of Assam trader

SHILLONG: In the wake of a trader from Assam and his driver were being killed in Dalu  recently, West Garo Hills (WGH) Police are now contemplating to hold a joint meeting with the prospective sellers and buyers from Assam who often visit Garo Hills for trade purpose.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, West Garo Hills SP, Dr. Raghavendra Kumar MG said that in the recent murder case in Dalu, police had  arrested six people and money was also recovered

A gang had killed an Assam-based trader and his driver in Dalu recently

The SP added that the West Garo Hills police had issued advisory to the traders and  expressed concern over  the incident to his counterpart of Mankachar district in Assam.

“ We are telling traders not to get lured. The problem is they get after these gangs give advances which they cannot desist,” he said

He said that as the cashew nut season is starting , he would soon hold a meeting after the elections in Assam with the buyers and sellers to discuss the matter.

He also said that the traders from neighbouring districts before venturing to these areas should inform the local police about their itinerary  adding that security is also being provided to these traders who come for trade in weekly bazaar.

The Assam trader, Rohidul Islam, and driver Nur Aziz were lured by the gang to Sensenggre village of Dalu and from there taken towards Ontapara village where they were killed in cold blood and their bodies dumped in a jungle. An amount of Rs 1.20 lakh belonging to Islam and meant to pay for the arecanut consignment was also stolen by the gang.
