SHILLONG: The MDA government, which is facing a daunting challenge of tackling influx following continuous pressure from various groups over the issue, is contemplating to put up the draft of the amended Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 in the public domain.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said the state government is contemplating to seek the views of stakeholders on the proposed amendments, adding the drafting is likely to be completed next week.
According to Tynsong, the government will seek the views of the Dorbar Shnong, Hima, Nokma and other traditional bodies besides various NGOs on the proposed amendments.
When asked whether the government would convene a meeting with the traditional bodies and pressure groups to deliberate on the amendments, he said if there is a necessity, the government would definitely convene a meeting with representatives of both the traditional bodies and pressure groups. An official source said the proposed amendments will be placed before the Cabinet after incorporating the views and suggestions of various stakeholders as the government wants to address the core issues of influx and illegal immigration.
“The amendment of the Act will bring in a system to regulate the entry of people from outside the state,” Tynsong said.
Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had not ruled out the possibility of the government coming out with an ordinance on the amendments.
