MLA calls for redesigning waste management

SHILLONG: Umroi MLA George B Lyngdoh has stressed on the need to redesign the sustainable Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) plans for covering important and established rural markets to promote clean and green environment and sustainable waste management techniques.
In a letter to Commissioner and Secretary, PHE department WR Lyngdoh, George said that the interest amount accumulated under the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC), Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA), Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) district fund has not been utilised since the inception of the various cleanliness programmes in Ri Bhoi district. George pointed out that the resource can be effectively used for initiating sustainable and green SLWM activities for the established rural markets.
During the District Water and Sanitation Committee (DWSC) discussion on Tuesday, the MLA had raised concerns on the status of solid and waste management in several markets such as Bhoi Rymbong, Nongthymmai-Kyrdem and Umiam markets (MeECL premises).
