SHILLONG: Former deputy chief minister and UDP leader Bindo Lanong said the past Congress government led by Mukul Sangma had failed to resolve the boundary issue.
“I was amused to see Dr.Mukul Sangma, Leader of the Opposition demanding the state government to wake up an act on the inter-state boundary issue. Rhetoric is easier said than done for many Congress leaders, who have been all along mutely day dreaming and ignoring the protracted inter-state boundary with Assam, during their long tenure of about 38 years in power in Meghalaya”, Lanong said in a statement.
According to Lanong, all of a sudden they woke up, rapping the present state government for being irresponsible to solve the issue.
“The present lot of Congress leaders need to
be reminded that during their longest innings both in the Centre as well as in Assam and Meghalaya, till recent years, their inability to attend to the vital issue, is causing unending nemesis for both the people of the two states”, Lanong said.
The UDP leader recalled that at least during the term of the two regional party leaders P.K.Mahanta and E.K.Mawlong, the then Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya respectively, meetings on the issue were held and both the leaders had also visited the disputed sites by road and by air.
“Dr Mukul owes an answer, whether he had followed up the matter, when he was heading the government for nearly two terms, while the Congress government was then at the Centre and in the state of Assam also”, Lanong said.
