TURA: Two high intensity thunder squalls that lashed Garo Hills on Friday morning has resulted in trees being uprooted and powers lines getting snapped while reports mention about injury to two children after a tree fell onto their house in remote Rongara area of South Garo Hills.

The first storm lashed the region at approximately 5:40 in the morning bringing gusty winds and rain which severely lashed several parts of West and South Garo Hills districts uprooting trees that crashed into nearby homes and shops.

A report from Rongara mention about a miraculous escape when a large tree fell onto their tin roof house during the storm. Two children in the house reportedly sustained injuries but are said to be out of danger. Damages to shops and houses were also reported from Baghmara town areas.

Another similar storm hit the East and North Garo Hills region at approximately 1 O’clock in the afternoon bringing in gusty winds and a brief shower. The intensity of the winds was such that a three wheeler auto rickshaw parked on the side of the road at Williamnagar was flung into a nearby gorge. The district headquarters town has since been without power throughout the afternoon and into the late evening hours.

Elsewhere, power lines snapped from falling trees in the North Garo Hills region and the 33 KV transmission line that supplies electricity to many parts of North and East Garo Hills got disrupted after a tree brought it down on the highway at Gokul near Bajengdoba. When reports last came in, efforts were on to try and restore power by nightfall.
