TURA: The cleanest village in the whole of Assam, recognised by governments and agencies alike, inhabited by the Garo tribe-Rangsapara in Goalpara district played host to a major literary event of the community on Saturday.

The 2019 Garo Sahitya Sabha meeting was organised in this pristine village during which writers and elders of the Garo community from Assam congregated for this annual special event.

Garo Sahitya Sabha President Soroj Sangma welcomed the gathering and highlighted the events of the past one year involving the sabha. Earlier, the flag of the sahitya sabha was unfurled by its adviser Dr. T Koksi Sangma followed by a prayer.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the release of three literary works by Garo authors, namely, Marthin Marak’s “Nitogipa Ritingrang”, Soroj Sangma’s “Nengrae Assameseko Skie Ra’ani” and Cliffson S Sangma’s “Ong’telaianirangchi Gima-Nasiatani aro Naljokanina Tarisoani”.

The meeting also led to the passing of several resolutions to further strengthen the sabha and expand its literary influence. The sabha is planning to hold a seminar in July relating to the traditional practices involving the seeking of the hand in marriage of a Garo groom, a workshop on traditional Garo dances which will also take place on the same month, traditional dress up and use of the musical instruments in the month of September and the publication of a book on Garo folklore.

The sahitya sabha has also decided to undertake an editorial improvement of the Garo text books for Classes 7 and 8 that are used by schools under Assam’s Board of Secondary Education (SEBA).

A host of Garo literary icons and elders were also elected to various posts of the Garo Sahitya Sabha for the year 2019-2021.

Among them were Soroj Sangma as President, Eisen Hower K Marak, Gitu Marak and Rex Sangma as Vice-Presidents, John Carry Sangma as the General Secretary, Sengister R Sangma, Lipson Sangma and Joshep Sangma as Joint Secretaries, Prabir Sangma as Chief Organiser, Dr. Tharsush Koksi Sangma as the Editor of the Sabha’s Garo magazine “Ku’silchi”, Hilberth Momin as Adviser, and several others in various literary, finance and education committees.
