GUWAHATI: The United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee will survey the storm-hit Garo-inhabited villages along the Assam-Meghalaya border to assess the damage incurred by villagers and seek relief from the government.
Of late, several villages in the western Assam district of Goalpara have borne the brunt of thunderstorms, which have damaged several houses in the Rangjuli and Amjonga areas.
“We will soon embark on a survey of the villages hit by a cyclonic storm on Tuesday. As of today, we have information of more than 25 villages in the Rangjuli and Amjonga areas which have been affected by the storm,” UGACMC chairman, Alex K. Sangma told The Shillong Times on Saturday.
Last week, over 400 families in Goalpara and adjoining Kamrup districts were affected by back-to-back thunderstorms, which also left a trail of destruction, blowing away tin roofs of residences and markets, uprooting several full-grown trees and damaging electric poles in the area.
“After conducting the survey, we will submit the report substantiated by photographs to the Goalpara deputy commissioner and thereafter seek relief and compensation for the villagers,” Sangma said.
Some of the villages affected by Tuesday’s storm include Rangjuli Garopara, Bombora, Goremari, Bakrapara, Patpara, Balukjuli, Budalongi, Nayapara, Kasinary, Okuri, Agaon and Landakunda. “All these are located in the Rangjuli area. We are collecting the names of villages affected by the storm in Amjonga area now,” he said.
Heavy rain has over the past couple weeks hit parts of the Northeast. As it is, the Met office has predicted more showers in the next 24 hours with a warning of thunderstorm with gusty wind speed (40 to 50 km per hour) at isolated places of Northeast, including Assam and Meghalaya.
