SHILLONG: The Nazareth Hospital, Shillong and its staff have expressed humiliation and outrage towards the frequent incidents of assault on medical professionals in our country.
Citing the incident in Bengal where an elderly person with a possible heart attack died in a hospital and the mob assault on a junior doctor causing serious injuries, the Hospital personnel said this trend has been growing all over India over the perception that if a patient dies it is the doctor’s fault.
Causing physical harm to the doctors as well as damage to property in this regard is quite acceptable, a release issued here informed.
“We certainly make mistakes and there may even be instances of negligence, but the public has every right to take the individual or institution to the court of law for redressal and not resort to violence and vandalism,” it added.
The Hospital staff felt a different sense of security in carrying out their medical duties because of the restraint and understanding among the city populace and the state as a whole.
Meanwhile, the NEIGRIHMS Resident Doctors Association (NRDA) strongly condemned the “barbaric acts of violence” on Dr P Mukherjee, NRSMCH, Kolkata who was performing his duty as an intern.
While expressing solidarity with the doctors in Bengal, the NRDA held a candlelight march at NEIGRIHMS on Friday evening to depict their strong support for the doctors who are suffering at the moment.
The NRDA also informed that they will join the all India strike that is being called by the Indian Medical Association on the 17th of this month.
“This inhuman and insane act of violence is not justifiable in any way. We are shocked and enraged at the indifference and failure of the government of West Bengal to protect the doctors community working there,” NRDA President, Dr Synrang Batngen Warjri said.
