SHILLONG: The Assembly Committee on Environment has lamented that none of the hospitals except NEIGRIHMS in Meghalaya has incinerators to treat organic waste while none of them has even commissioned their effluent treatment plant.
Talking to media persons here on Wednesday after the meeting of the Committee, chairman of the committee, SK Sunn said that eight out of 12 Hospitals in the state would commission their plant within 15 days even as he was irked at that even the incinerator at the marten looked after by the Shillong Municipal Board, has not been functional for the last one year .
“For bigger project, the Government has prepared a DPR and they are in the process of getting a sanction from the Ministry of Environment and Forest for installation of a treatment plant for treating organic waste,” he said.
Earlier he said that the Committee was very disappointed with the reply of the State Pollution Control Board and Health Department as they have not been able to give satisfactory reply as far as management of biological and organic waste is concern.
Lamenting that all the hospitals do not have proper sewerage effluent treatment plant, the Committee has directed the state Pollution Control Board to conduct inspection of the hospitals within 15 days and submit a report to the committee after which the committee would conduct an inspection of these hospitals
Meanwhile, the Committee which also reviewed the functioning of the Pollution Control Board was irked with the Board for not being able to look into the level of smoke emission of trucks and buses in the city
“ We took a strong view on the failure of the Board and the Transport department in containing the emission which leads to the air pollution, “member of the Committee HM Shangpliang said.
The Committee has also given 15 days time to the Pollution Control Board to come out with a report on how many cases of smoke emission have been penalized and how many stations have been set up to ensure that there is no pollution.
