SHILLONG: The Khasi Jaintia Butchers Welfare Association (KJBWA) sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) after a land has been identified in Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi which will not be used as a market but as a stock for cattle.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday after meeting the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) CEM, Teinwell Dkhar, the president of the association, Generous Warlarpih informed that the CEM will discuss the matter again on Friday to take a decision.
The association members are adamant in not buying any cattle from Khanapara market since it is held every day while Warlarpih contended that the market should be held once a week to curb cattle smuggling.
“We are seeking NOC for a temporary stock at Byrnihat, NOC from the shnong has been granted, so we need the same from the KHADC also,” he said.
According to him, 80 per cent of cattle smuggling can be curbed under the new system.
Warlarpih maintained that the association is bent on curbing cattle smuggling to Bangladesh.
He said the cattle were in high demand in Bangladesh which caters to the food processing industry invested by businessmen from Middle East.
The association has stopped buying cattle from Khanapara on June 3 and started their strike not to sell beef in the market on June 7.
