150 hospitalised for suspected food poisoning in Assam
Rangia (Assam): At least 150 people, including women and children, have been hospitalised due to suspected food poisoning in Kamrup district, officials said. The incident occurred at Lenga village near North Guwahati in Kamrup district on Saturday night. According to the village head, the villagers started feeling unwell after taking ‘prasad’ at a religious programme. The 150 persons were admitted to a government hospital in Amangaon on Saturday night after they displayed symptoms of food poisoning such as stomach ache, diarrhoea and vomiting. The condition of two persons was critical following which they were referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, the officials said. The victims were out of danger but have been kept under observation. (PTI)


Tezpur varsity bags GYTI award
SHILLONG: Tezpur University has bagged the prestigious Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Award for the third consecutive year, a release issued here informed on Sunday. The Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu presented Saurav Jyoti Sarma, Abhijit Nath and Chandeep S. Gogoi, the three recently passed out students of Department of Mechanical Engineering for developing a panipuri vending machine at a function organised by the Department of Biotechnology in New Delhi on Saturday. GYTI awards are presented to innovative student projects in engineering, biotechnology, agriculture, pharmacy, material science and other applied technological domains every year. Others who were present in the occasion included the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan, RA Mashelkar, Chairman of BIRAC SITARE, Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) programme, Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Anil K Gupta, CSIR Bhatnagar Fellow and Founder Honey Bee Network.


14-ft cobra rescued in Nagaon
Nagaon (Assam): A 14-feet-long King cobra, spotted by locals in Jiajuri Tea Estate area, was rescued and taken back to the ‘jungle’ on Friday. The huge poisonous snake was first spotted by tea garden workers in the wee hours on Friday. As the news spread, there was panic all around, said locals. Instead of deciding to kill the snake, they reached out to snake rescuers to save the reptile. “Binod ‘Dulu’ Borah, a snake rescuer, reached the spot and rescued the cobra. He later released it in the Suwang Reserve Forest nearby,” said Deben Tanti, a villager. (ANI)


Police nab fraud sister cop
Ambassa(Tripura): Police nabbed the cheating sister cop in connection with deceiving people with allurement of providing jobs in police in Dhalai district here on Saturday night. Recently, people alleged that the police constable Zakir Hussain and his woman constable sister Salma Begam cheated people with lakhs of rupees in the name of providing jobs. The police, after complaints were lodged, registered a case under section 420 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) with Kamalpur police station. The Sub Inspector, Sujit Rudrapal and his team nabbed Salma Begam from Bisalgarh as she was posted in the women police station there. Zakir Hussain remained absconding and police continued their search operations. (UNI)
