SHILLONG: The state BJP has asked the MHRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal to mention Christian or Christian community in the relevant paragraph of chapter 6 of the Draft National Education Policy.
In a letter to the Union Minister, BJP State president Shibun Lyngdoh said that when other religious minority groups such as Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists and even Jains which constitute 0.4 per cent of the Indian population have got a place in the paragraph of chapter 6 of the Draft National Education Policy, 2019, the party feels that in order to avoid unnecessary misunderstanding among the people, a mention of Christian or Christian community should also be made in the relevant paragraph of chapter 6 of the policy wherever it is found justified and appropriate.
Earlier, the state president said that the chapter 6 of the policy deals with equitable and inclusive education and also spells out the rights and privileges of religious minority groups such as Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains but Christianity, perhaps unintentionally, did not find a mention among other religious minority groups.
“We feel that the presence of 2,40,80,016 Christians which constitute 2.3 of the Indian population as per 2011 census should not be neglected,” Lyngdoh said.
