Sawkmie urges speedy construction of medical college
SHILLONG: Opposition Chief Whip and Congress MLA from Mawlai constituency PT Sawkmie has asked the State Government to speed up construction of the Tura Medical College and Hospital. Supporting the demand of the Combined Citizens’ Bodies from Tura in this regard, the Mawlai MLA said that the government should expedite the work for completion of the project within a stipulated time. He also said the people do not want to see the medical colleges at Tura and Shillong go the Crowborough Hotel way, waiting to be completed since 1987.
New GOC of 101 Area appointed
SHILLONG: Lieutenant General Tumul Varma has taken over as the General Officer Commanding 101 Area with effect from Monday, a statement issued here said. Varma, on assuming the command of 101 Area, the ‘First in Dacca Formation’, paid tribute to the gallant martyrs of the Indian Army. Commissioned into the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering in December 1984, the General Officer has had an illustrious career spanning 35 years. He has been a military observer as part of the United Nations Mission in Somalia besides commanding an Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Battalion.
Ban on sale of tobacco to minors
NONGPOH: The District Magistrate, Ri Bhoi, Nongpoh has promulgated Section 144 CrPC in the district prohibiting the vendors, stalls and shopkeepers selling cigarettes and other tobacco products to minors below the age of 18 years in the market places and in areas within a radius of one hundred yards of any educational institution, a statement issued here informed. She further prohibited any person smoking in public place including hospitals, educational institutions, restaurants, et al.
Endangered species rescued
NONGPOH: A Slow loris which was rescued by a resident of Mawlasnai village from a nearby forest in Ri Bhoi was finally handed over to the custody of the Wildlife Department in Shillong on Monday. It may be mentioned here that Krilda Shadap rescued the Slow loris last week, but could not manage to come over and hand the rescued animal to the officials of the Wild Life Department due to financial issues. However, with the help of her grand-son, Shining Shadap along with the support of the HYC members from Ri Bhoi, the animal was finally handed over to the officials of the Wild Life Department at Lady Hydari Park in the city on Monday. Meanwhile, Shining Shadap, while talking to The Shillong Times, informed that his grandmother had rescued one of the endangered animals from a forest nearby the village with the intention to protect it from the hunters and that she could not hand over the animal to the concerned authority earlier due to financial problems.
Free-of-cost skills training
SHILLONG: All India Society for Electronics and Computer Technology (AISECT) has partnered with the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmen Training (DECT) under Government of Meghalaya’s Department of Labour, a release issued here informed. As part of the partnership, AISECT will provide free-of-cost skills training to 300 candidates from the State under the Centrally Sponsored State Managed (CSSM) component of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 2.0. The training, set to commence in the first week of August, will be conducted across five sectors including IT/ITES, Capital Goods, Construction, Green Jobs and Telecom. To be eligible for the programme, the candidates should be beneficiaries of DECT and should have a minimum educational qualification of 8th/10th or 12th pass (based on job roles).
Kids run for Kargil war martyrs
SHILLONG: HQ DGAR, Shillong has organised a cross country running called the ‘Run for Martyrs’ for the children on Sunday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas to pay tribute to the martyrs of Kargil War. As many as 200 children including boys and girls of different age groups participated in the event. The event was a friendly cross country running, for the sake of participation without any competition involved. The route included Laitkor, Nongkren and Umiew villages.
MDC urges repair of road
SHILLONG: The MDC of Silkigre, East Garo Hills, Augustine R Marak has informed that the road from Chokpot to Sibbari is in urgent need for patch up as its condition is worsening perpetually due to heavy rainfall. It has caused problems for vehicles to ply from Tengkigre to Sibbari and people are finding it difficult to carry commodities to Silkigre Bajar, she informed. Marak has urged the concerned department to take immediate action to mend the damaged road.
