Shillong: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has accused the GNLA of resorting to desperate attempts by calling a 72-hour bandh in parts of Garo Hills to pressurize the government to call off the operation against them.

“The GNLA has been piggy riding on the demand for a separate state for the Garos to be able to carry out their criminal activities,” the Chief Minister stated, adding, “This demand of the outfit (GNLA) is just a camouflage since their main objective was to make money at the cost of the development of the State,” Dr Mukul added.

“The GNLA in the past also had made these kinds of desperate attempts to pressurize the government. They are trying to do the same by imposing the 72-hour bandh in Ampati and Selsella,” Dr Sangma said while speaking to reporters here on Wednesday.

While maintaining that there is no question of calling off the operations against the outfit, he said that the operation to neutralize the GNLA would continue.

The Chief Minister said that the GNLA should surrender their sophisticated weapons and also put a stop to their various criminal activities including extortion, killing and kidnapping.

Dr Sangma however assured that if the GNLA comes forward to surrender, they would be treated the same way as cadres of other outfits who have already surrendered.
