TURA: Farmers from Resubelpara in North Garo Hills were on Friday encouraged to take up coconut plantation as a livelihood option to boost their income.
A block level seminar on the prospect of coconut cultivation and post harvest management technology was held for the farmers at SGSY Hall, Resubelpara block in which, farmers from Kharkutta, Resubelpara and Bajengdoba blocks participated and were enlightened of the diverse significance of coconut cultivation.
The seminar organized by the District Horticulture department, Resubelpara through Coconut Development Board (CDB), Guwahati emphasized upon the farmers the multi benefits of coconut and the need for area expansion for coconut cultivation in order to increase coconut productivity to meet the high commercial demands.
Highlighting the versatile usage of coconut, Additional Deputy Commissioner T K Sangma, who graced the occasion as the chief guest said besides the nutritive edible features of coconut its non edible features like leaves, roots, husk and shell are widely used for other commercial applications. Since coconut and its produces have economical values she therefore urged the farmers to opt for coconut plantation besides other sustainable farming to boost their livelihood.Director of CDB, Guwahati, Lunghar Obed discussed the prospects of coconut cultivation in the district adding, the district’s suitable climatic condition and geographical location makes its accessible for easy commercialisation. He also informed of the various farmers welfare schemes under CDB.
