Pressure group submits memo to CM demanding infra

SHILLONG: The United A·chik Youth Federation (UAYF), Rengdim, West Khasi Hills, District, on Friday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma urging him to take up developmental projects in West Khasi Hills for the benefit of its people.
In the memorandum, the pressure group asked the chief minister to complete the long pending under construction PWD road from Shallang to Khalu via Rengdim.
Shallang to Khalu road via Rengdim, under the jurisdiction of West Khasi Hills, is under construction since many years.
They also demanded construction of new PWD Road from Bookchung to Kan·sruisuk (Rangram) via Rajagula and from Rengdim Matchok – Kan·ram to Rajagula via Wakpangram village.
“There is a huge population residing in the district which is adjacent to South Garo Hills and it is bounded by Simsang River. The villages are very backward and neglected for several decades since the time of British rule. The people of the area have to travel long distances on foot to reach the market,” the pressure group said.
The memorandum also included the demand for drinking water supplies, sanitary toilet facilities in every Lower Primary, Upper Primary and High Schools.
Both private and government schools and high schools in the district do not have proper drinking water supply or toilet facilities.
The organisation also urged the chief minister to build a government higher secondary school in Shallang and Rengdim areas.
“Most of the families in Shallang are below poverty line and the government-run college will be of great help,” the organisation said.
Alleging that the teachers posted in L.P and U.P schools in the district do not perform their duty sincerely, the pressure group demanded the government to take action against them.
The organisation further said that some of the villages in West Khasi Hills do not have electricity.
Rengdim, Shallang, Rongtok, Rangram (Seningkri), Goreng ‘A’ have not been electrified since the time of British. “We have approached the MePDCL Department, Nongstoin in this regard but our request fell on deaf ears, the NGO said.
They also demanded the government to improve the health facilities.
The demand to erect a mobile network tower was also included in the memorandum so that the locals can contact emergency numbers in case of fire, accidents and others.
The need to establish a Block Development Office in Shallang and Police Outpost in Rengdim was also put forward by the organisation.
They also urged the government to build a hanging bridge across the Simsang River, from Goreng ‘A’, Goreng ‘B’, Awek Gittim, Watre Gittim, to Jadi Bazar via Era A·ning.
