Agartala: Following pressure from the unregistered e-rickshaw drivers, Tripura Chief Minster Biplab Kumar Deb has announced to extend the registration period for another month and directed the administration to stop enforcement against them till the process is completed. In compliance with the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act, Tripura government has made registration and insurance of e-rickshaws and e-carts mandatory and enforcement against the non-registered e-rickshaws had begun after the deadline of July 31 last. A large number of e-rickshaws did not get registration, as they did not possess valid purchase documents and accordingly the administration banned their movement on the streets. They have been agitating across the state seeking registration and insurance without purchase documents for the last three days but the transport department denied it. Meanwhile, a young e-rickshaw owner-cum-driver Vivekananda Malakar (49) committed suicide in his rented house here on Saturday. The agitating e-rickshaw drivers claimed it was due to the uncertainty of registration of his e-cart. (UNI)
