JOWAI: Jaintia Hills police is still clueless about the whereabouts of the kidnapped school student Fortunate Rymbai.

Fortunate, a Class VIII student of the Khliehriat Higher Secondary School, was kidnapped by some unidentified miscreants on Monday. The kidnappers subsequently demanded Rs 1 crore as ransom for his release.

Police even failed to ascertain the identity of the kidnappers. It is the second such incident in last two months in Jaintia Hills district.

“We strongly suspect that it is a handiwork of a group of gangs”, a senior police officer from Khliehriat said adding that the “involvement of militant group can not be ruled out.”

In March, a driver along with his vehicle was abducted. Rs. 7 lakh was, reportedly, paid to the abductors. But the driver and his vehicle are still untraceable.

Though the matter was reported to Khliehriat Police, Fortunate’s parents who wanted their son to be released took three days’ time to arrange the money.
