Berlin: Robert Lewandowski’s hat-trick helped defending champions Bayern Munich to take all three points from Schalke in the second round of Bundesliga on Saturday.
The “Bavarians” secured their first win of the season as the “Royal Blues” failed to stop Robert Lewandowski, who scored his fifth goal with two games played into the new season. Schalke started confidently into the encounter and made Bayern’s life difficult in the opening stage. Bayern grew into the game as the clock ticked and came close through Lewandowski twice. However, Schalke’s goalkeeper Alexander Nubel was on guard and defused a volley and a powerful header from the Poland international in the 17th minute. Nubel was hapless moments later though, as Jonjoe Kenny fouled Kingsley Coman inside the bow allowing Lewandowski to slot home the subsequent penalty clinically into the bottom left corner. For the remainder of the first half Bayern controlled possession whereas Schalke were unable to pose any threat to Manuel Neuer. (PTI)
