In its bid to provide safe and 
hygienic meat products to the people, the State Government few years back had issued a directive to all the butcher shops to keep their products covered.
However, many butcher shops in the city do not adhere to the directives at all as they keep their products exposed to all the unhygienic flies and dirt of all kind.
Butcher shops everywhere in the city, be it in Jhalupara, Motphran, Qualapatty or Mawlai, have failed to adhere to the directive.
What is surprising that people buy meat products from these shops at their will without any concern for hygiene.
To ease the concern about the quality of meat available in the city and the State in general, the Government mooted construction of an abattoir (slaughter house) at Mawiong. This came as a respite to those meat consumers who had concerns over the quality of meat they were consuming.
However, the local Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai and Mawiong have opposed construction of the abattoir and have even sought court intervention seeking a stay order on the construction of the abattoir at Mawiong.
Speaking on a lighter vein, Principal Secretary in charge Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department, P Naik wondered why some people in the city were opposed to the government’s concern for hygiene.
Speaking on the issue of butchers in the city not covering the meat products properly, Naik said that the department would provide them with some sort of wrap to cover their meat produces once the abattoir at Mawiong is completed and made operational. (By Aafaque Hussain)
