SHILLONG: The former leader of the disbanded ANVC-B, Bernard N Marak, has said that overloaded trucks plying from Bhutan to Bangladesh via Garo Hills need to be stopped immediately.
He said that overloaded trucks from Bhutan carrying stones to Bangladesh are destroying the Garo Hills roads.
Stating that the trucks are secretly plying on the Phulbari-Tikrikilla road, which is in a very pathetic condition, he said that they are also plying on the Tura-Dalu road which is under repair.
“The overloaded trucks are plying at late night and we have come to know that some pressure group leaders are escorting them for a good sum of money as commission,” he said.
He also alleged that on Monday, some of these trucks passed through Tura Ringre market at around 5.30 pm putting the lives of public in danger as they were driven recklessly.
“Allowing these trucks to ply through Tura during busy hours is a risk to the civilians. There has been a series of accidents in the past and no compensation was paid to the victims.
“A couple of months back, some stones were dropped at a sharp turning near Civil Surgeon office,” Marak added.
