SHILLONG: A training centre run by the Seng Kynthei Pohkseh Pyllun (SKPP) for the past 8 years now has benefited the local youth of the city by providing them with employment and giving them an opportunity to stand on their own feet.

Training the youth in weaving and knitting, this training centre has come a long way since 2005 whereby it has been recognized by the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

President of SKPP NL Rapthap informed that the youth who are undergoing training in this centre also receive stipend every year and also stated that every year, faculty from NEHU come and provide training to the local youth. “The main aim of the union is to help people belonging to poor background especially those who earns their livelihood by working in people’s house, giving them an opportunity to start their own business and stand in their own feet”, Rapthap said.

The SKPP president also informed that the salary for the trainers and cost of running the centre is borne by the union itself with help from local representatives.

“The kind of training provided at the centre is very similar to that provided at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Shillong”, Rapthap said.

To add up to its funds, the SKPP on Saturday organized a Food Festival at Pohkseh which witnessed the participation of many women who presented delicious dishes for the people.

On the same day, a medical check-up campaign was also organized whereby doctors from the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Homoepathy (NEIAH), Shillong participated. The food festival was opened by the Rangbah Shnong of Pohkseh, Lining Lyngdoh.
