NE councils to discuss 6th Schedule amendment

SHILLONG: Chairman of Forum of Councils under Sixth Schedule (FOCUSS) PN Syiem informed that a meeting of all the autonomous district councils of the North East will be held on October 4 at Pinewood Hotel to discuss on the Sixth Schedule amendment.
Syiem sent individual letters to Bodoland Territorial Council, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Autonomous District Councils of Khasi, Jaintia, Garo, Chakma Lai Mara and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.
Syiem, who is also the Chairman of the KHADC, in the letter mentioned that a joint memorandum on the proposed amendment will be submitted in an effort to protect the interest of the indigenous people.

KHADC meeting tomorrow
The Chief Executive Committee (CEM) of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Teinwell Dkhar informed that a meeting of all MDCs will be held on September 24 on the Sixth Schedule Amendment.
It may be mentioned that talks are going on at the state government level also on the amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Dkhar also attended the recent meeting of the committee on Sixth Schedule.
The CEM has been criticised by the opposition Congress MDCs in the KHADC for not calling them in any meeting on the Sixth Schedule.
Congress MDC Carness Sohshang has expressed gratitude to the CEM for convening the meeting.
According to Sohshang, the MDCs should also discuss on the Education Policy, MMDR Act and Forest Act.
