SHILLONG: Following the Supreme Court directive on the ban of tinted glasses in vehicles, the Shillong Traffic police (STP) swung into action on Tuesday removing dark glasses from as many as 1142 vehicles in the city.

The STP removed tinted glasses from 533 vehicles under Sadar Police station, 259 under Lumdiengjri police station and 150 in Laitumkhrah area of the city.

The traffic personnel launched the crack down on vehicles with tinted glasses in different localities using blades to remove the dark films.

It may be mentioned that the Apex Court had banned the use of tinted glasses beyond permissible limits in vehicles with effect from May 4 after a plea was filed alleging that many crimes are committed in cars with tinted glasses. As per the order, any use of additional material or film on the glass to curtail the Visual Light Transmission (VLT) is banned and heavy fines will be imposed on violators.

Additional Superintendent of police (traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh also warned that similar checks would be conducted on Wednesday to ensure that tinted glasses are removed from all such vehicles.

However, it was reported that many cars, especially government vehicles, were let off even as they had tinted glasses in them.

It may be recalled that last year, the State Government had ordered the removal of tinted glasses from vehicles but the order was criticized by a section of the society.
