No citizen should be put through any inconvenience: DGP

Shillong: In order to give more teeth to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, the Superintendents of Police of each district have been directed to convene a joint meeting with their respective Deputy Commissioners to prepare a draft Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) to implement the Task Force/ District Level team to check influx in the state.
The draft will also be forwarded to the government.
Meghalaya police organised a one-day workshop on Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 on Wednesday in which Additional Secretary, Law Department N.K Sangma, Joint Labour Commissioner RW Wahlang, and Licensing officer, District Council Henry Syiem were the resource persons.
They enlightened the participants on the provisions of various Acts which are being enforced in the state, including the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, the Inter State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment & Conditions of Service) Act, 1979, and issues pertaining to influx, labour licenses, trading licenses and others.
Director General of Police R. Chandranathan emphasized on the necessity of a multi- agency approach by involving various stakeholders to address various issues that lead to infiltration or influx.
He also apprised the members present in the meeting that while implementing provision of the Residents Act, no citizen of India should be put through any inconvenience or restraint from exercising his or her rights as guaranteed under the Indian Constitution.
He also mooted a proposal to the district councils and labour department to impart workshop/seminar/awareness programme to police personnel as they play important role as law enforcers.
