Rice powder resembling heroin seized
SHILLONG: Based on source information, ANTF East Jaintia Hills intercepted one vehicle on Tuesday near Malidor and recovered around 750 grams of powdered puffed rice packed in 25 soap boxes from the possession of two persons travelling in a car. East Jaintia Hills SP Vivekananda Singh said that the appearance and packaging was exactly similar to one used for heroin. He also said that the two persons were let off with a warning and were not arrested.
Ayushman Bharat Diwas
SHILLONG: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) celebrated Ayushman Bharat Diwas at its premises to commemorate the first anniversary of Ayushman Bharat on Monday. On this occasion, a role play was enacted to create awareness about Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and to avail benefits under the scheme. Saplings were planted by the chief guest, DM Thappa, Director of NEIGRIHMS, Skhemjingmut Law, IT Manager State Health Authority, A.C. Phukan, Dean, D. T. Umdor, Deputy Director and N. Topno, Medical Superintendent. An information desk kiosk was also opened for patients to avail information through brochures and pamphlets about the schemes during the Ayushman Pakhwada.
Shillong int’l expo under way
SHILLONG: While thousands of people prefer to shop online in today’s generation, the ongoing Shillong International Expo is providing an opportunity for people to feel and taste the products live which are on sale. The Shillong International Expo, which is being organised by the North East Trade and Entrepreneurship Promotion Organsation, showcases products from several foreign countries including Thailand and Bangladesh. It started on September 10 and will continue till September 29. The expo has a living statue of Mahatma Gandhi besides a Cinema and VR Zone which is being presented for the first time by Jadooz. An official from the organisation said they will offer huge discounts on the last three days of the event. The expo also has exclusive health and gym equipments from Arifit besides an Indian food court, Kashmiri and Panipat handlooms.
SE organic bags launched in Manipur
SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s SE organic bag was launched in Manipur during a workshop organised on “Plastic Pollution: Problem and Solution” at Rayburn College, Churachandpur, Manipur. It was launched by T. Pankhanlian, Chairman of ADCC, Churachandpur. The co-founders and directors of Saindur Enviro, Vivek Kumar and Napoleon S Mawphniang were also present. Kumar delivered a presentation on how plastic is causing damage to the environment and human life. He also showed statistics on the use of plastic worldwide annually and also informed about the problems that plastic cause over time. He talked on how Saindur Enviro took the challenge of fighting against plastic pollution with SE organic bags which is 100 per cent compostable carry bag and packaging material which is a promising solution to the plastic pollution. The authorities of Manipur appreciated the effort of Meghalaya.
Programmes under Poshan Maah
AMPATI/WILIIAMNAGAR: As part of the celebration of Poshan Maah, various programmes and campaigns are being conducted across South West Garo Hills at the district, block, village and school levels. On Thursday, Participation in Convergence Awareness Programme as part of Poshan Campaign was conducted jointly by departments of Agriculture, Horticulture and Agriculture Technical Management Agency at the Training Hall of District Agriculture Office at Ampati. Besides awareness to the farmers, training-cum-demonstration on vermin-compost making, kitchen garden organic farming and mushroom cultivation was also conducted during the day-long programme. Earlier on Wednesday, an awareness campaign for adolescent girls was conducted across the schools in the district. Meanwhile, Poshan Mela was held at the Farmers’ Market in Williamnagar, organised by the District Programme Officer, ICDS, East Garo Hills, in collaboration with the district administration, where the line departments like Agriculture, Horticulture, Medical, Social Welfare, Self Help Groups (SHGs), Anganwadi workers put up stalls for selling their products.
Kisan Mela-cum-harvest festival
TURA: A one-day Kisan Mela-cum-Harvest Festival and sale of agricultural products was held in convergence with Rashtriya Poshan Abhiyan under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH 2018-19) at Matchakolgre L P School Playground, Tura on Thursday. The programme was organised by District Horticulture Office, West Garo Hills and supported by District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, District Agriculture Office and Department of Fisheries, Tura. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh mentioned that most of the farmers of the region do not have Kisan Credit Cards (KCC), while, as per the instructions of the central government, every farmer should have their KCCs which is necessary for availing various schemes from the government. The chief guest along with other dignitaries inaugurated the stalls put up by different department at Kisan Mela for sale of local agricultural produce of the region.
NIT to hold sixth convocation
SHILLONG: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya will hold the Sixth Convocation on Saturday in which secretary of Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, G. Satheesh Reddy will be the chief guest. On the occasion, NIT Meghalaya will felicitate Reddy by conferring an Honorary Ph.D. Degree (D. Litt) for his remarkable contribution towards indigenous design, development & deployment of diversified missiles & strategic system and guided weapons in India. Further, as many as 197 students will be conferred various UG, PG and Ph.D. degrees across various programmes of the departments. Degrees will be conferred to 107 B.Tech. students, 45 M.Tech. students, 35 M.Sc. students, and 10 Ph.D. scholars. The prestigious President’s Gold Medal for the year 2019 was awarded to Shivam Prasad from the Department of Computer Science Engineering for his best performance in academic and extracurricular activities.
