SHILLONG: As part of the observation of Gandhi Jayanti and Swachh Bharat Mission, the children of Sohryngkham Village along with the Village Dorbar of Mawryngkneng took a pledge to do away with the use of plastic.
In a short programme prior to the community cleaning drive and the collection of plastic, the Dorbar Shnong, Sohryngkham along with hundreds of children gathered at the Dorbar Hall and solemnly pledged before the BDO of Mawryngkneng Block, Ronnie Wahlang to do away with the use and littering of plastic in schools, community areas and the Highway.
The BDO who participated in the cleaning drive exhorted the students to be the ambassadors of plastic free campaign and work in tandem with the district and Block authorities.
In another programme, the business community of Mawryngkneng Main Road pledged to work towards plastic free Mawryngkeng Market.
The pledge was taken in the presence of the BDO and the members of the Village Dorbar.
After the programme, men and women joined the dorbar in cleaning the Mawryngkneng Highway and sensitised commuters on the need to discard single use plastics with care.
Further as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, over 1500 kgs of plastic were collected by the various village dorbars, VECs and SHGs under Mawryngkneng Block.

Meanwhile, Saindur Enviro celebrated Gandhi Jayanti in-line with the Swachh Bharat Mission by intensifying the fight against plastic pollution in the state.
A team from Saindur Enviro organised a number of awareness programmes and cleaning drives to fight plastic pollution in different localities of the city as well as in different parts of Meghalaya. An awareness programme was organised in collaboration with Anup Chand School in Police Bazar followed by a cleaning drive.
Another awareness programme was organised in Iewduh. Shopkeepers, residents, representatives of Hima Mylliem and representatives from District Council participated in the programmewhich was followed by a cleaning drive that witnessed active participation by representatives from the Sein Jaintia Women’s Wing, Shillong.
Awareness programmes and cleaning drives were also organised in Lumpongdeng Umlyngka in Upper Shillong, Laitumkhrah, Laban, Nongmynsong, Nongthymmai, Lower Mawprem, Khliehriat, Ladrymbai, Umroi, Nongpoh, Pynursla, and Sohra.
SE organic garbage bags were used in all cleaning drives.
Saindur Enviro also sponsored SE organic garbage bags for a cleaning drive organised by the NSS units of St. Edmund’s and St. Anthony’s College, Shillong.
