SHILLONG: The election of the State Executive Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to be held in December this year.
Sources from the party informed that there is a small chance for Shibun Lyngdoh to continue as the state president of the party due to the fact that presidents are appointed for a term of three years.
The source also stated that there have been occasions when the term of a president is extended by an additional three years.
However, Lyngdoh has served as the state president of the party for four years and extending his tenure would exceed party’s second extension of 3 years.
Accordingly, the election at the booth level has already started while the election at the constituency is scheduled to begin from November 1 to 15.
The election at the District level will be held from November 15 to 30 followed by the election of the state executive committee.
“There is democracy in the Bharatiya Janata Party. There are elections for every level from booth to the state president and the same practice is followed even at the national level,” the source said.
Party leader JA Lyngdoh is the incharge of the elections and BJP President Amit Shah also stated that he will make way for a new leader to head the saffron party by the end of the year when its organisational elections are over.
Shah, who is also the Union Home Minister, said that a new party president is expected to take charge by December.
