TURA: Meghalaya police commandos from the elite SWAT unit and the CRPF CoBRA personnel attacked and destroyed one of the largest militant camps belonging to the GNLA near Sobokgre village of east Garo Hills on Saturday morning.

Commandos on the search for the GNLA camp came under sustained rebel fire from sentries positioned at lookout posts outside the camp area just after 10 AM.

The camp was located near the Chibok waterfalls, 16 kms from Williamnagar across Simsang river.

The militants used heavy weaponry firing several rocket propelled grenades against the police and the commandos also retaliated with 2-inch mortars to blast their way through.

However, there were no casualties from either the police or the rebel side.

Sounds of huge explosions could be heard as far off as Williamnagar town during the fifteen minute encounter.

After the firing had stopped and the rebels had retreated to the Durama hills police entered the camp and found a large number of dwelling sheds where nothing short of a hundred cadres could easily be lodged.

At the time of the encounter there were as many as 60 militants said police after coming across mugs, plates and clothes hurriedly left behind.

“The camp was almost like an entire village closeted as can be seen from its huge size. We believe it to be their general headquarters and Sohan D Shira was present in the camp during the encounter,” said police.
