Awareness on indigenous languages

SHILLONG: The Department of English and Communication, Martin Luther Christian University, will hold a two-day event to commemorate the International Year of Indigenous Languages starting on Tuesday.
The even aims to create awareness on the vital role played by each indigenous language in the North Eastern region and preserve and promote linguistic diversity.
The inaugural programme, which will be held at MLCU Main Campus, Nongrah, will include the Thomas Jones Oration by Dr. Andrew J May, great-great-grandson of Thomas Jones followed by the release of Dr. Janet Hujon’s translation and commentary of Soso Tham’s Ki Sngi Barim U Hynniew Trep.
The book will be released by Kong Sarahline Giri Tham, great-great-grandniece of Soso Tham. A panel discussion will also be held on ‘The need to protect, preserve and promote the Indigenous Languages of North East India’, which will be chaired by Paul Lyngoh, Executive Member of the KHADC.
Wednesday’s programme will be marked by presentation of traditional dance forms from various tribes of North East, tasting of indigenous food items and a narration of community folktales.
